MANAGING SENSITIVE SKIN

Supporting customers’ dry and sensitive skin needs

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Gain a better understanding of skin sensitivity and its connection with the skin barrier
  • Learn how the Aveeno® range is formulated to nourish and cleanse sensitive skin
  • Know what you can recommend to customers for their skincare regime

Sensitive isn’t a skin type; it’s a skin state. Dry, tight, irritable or itchy: it's all sensitive. As you have seen in the video above, it is thought that sensitive skin is associated with the impairment of the skin barrier.

THE SKIN MICROBIOME

As the largest organ of the human body, skin is colonised by beneficial micro-organisms and acts as a physical barrier to prevent the invasion of pathogens. If the barrier is broken or when the balance between these organisms and pathogens is disturbed, the skin barrier can be compromised. The microbiome is also reliant on a balanced pH range to support the growth of diverse good bacteria.

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY-LOOKING SKIN BARRIER

Maintaining healthy skin is vital for it to function as an effective barrier between the internal body and the outside environment.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS?

Dry skin has different levels of severity, so your customers will have different emollient needs. Some may have normal to dry skin, while others may have very dry to irritable skin, or skin that is prone to eczema.

In addition, dry skin severity can change, with flare-ups or successful maintenance meaning different products may be needed at different times.
